Only Mostly Devastated- BOOK REVIEW

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

RATING- 🌟🌟🌟🌟

AUTHOR- Sophie Gonzales

If you are in the mood for a light, fluffy YA Romance to lift your mood, then you have found your ideal read. I downloaded it on a whim online, not having a single clue what this book is about and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

It follows the story of this boy name Olly who has to transfer to a new town in his last year of high school because his aunt is really sick and his family has moved nearer temporarily to support her. And on top of that he is being ghosted by the cute guy, Will, whom he had been dating all Summer. So the story really starts rolling when he starts at the new school and comes face to face with Will, the same guy from summer but somehow completely different from the person he knew.

We see him stumbling around trying to deal with this new situation, trying to fit in a new school, trying to make new friends, surrounded by students who very easily make really hurtful homophobic remarks, and getting the most out of his last year of high school.

It does get a pretty angsty at some moments, dealing with grief and the not fear of not blending in, but even with all that, it is a cute, funny, really short and sweet read that you can breeze through.

The writing is perfect it is not too youthful and touches on some very delicate small things that one might overlook and has just the right amount of angst to feel good. Another thing I really liked about it was that it doesn't overuse or try to incorporate too many teenage pop culture references or slang language.

It also had really well fleshed-out and realistic side characters that I also really enjoyed. The book was really able to cover many different themes in a really short amount of pages. So if that sounds appealing to you, you should definitely give this one a try and tell me what you think!

Happy Reading!
