Hey lovelies! Yes, it is finally here! The last book in the Grishaverse (that we know of...) Quite a bittersweet moment for everyone, I'm sure. Although the biggest news that I'd like to break to everyone is that there are more than enough chances for Six of Crows #3 to come!!
This is usually when we start badgering the author to put out a book for us...
As I did mention before, I didn't absolutely love the King of Scars because of a few things.
Mainly I just really thought that Nina's story got sidelined, and not because the author did something wrong, but really because I always saw King of Scars as Nikolai's story, and even when I was reading the chapters from Nina's perspective, I was like, "but I wanna know what's going on there!"
And when I asked a few others, thay also said that it felt as if it was overshadowed by Nikolai's story. Although I really loved seeing Nina grow so much as a character and see her struggle with her grief, I think the problem was that in King of Scars, we couldn't see how exactly everything that was happening to Nina tied into what was going on in Ravka. I wish that we could have gotten a novella that focused solely on Nina's story so that both the storylines could get the focus they need.
But coming back to Rule of Wolves, it had some interesting twists and curveballs in store for us and I couldn't predict any of them.
The writing is special in the way that it balances really rich descriptions with everything else, so it never feels too dense.
Leigh Bardugo never fails with her stunning and complex character-work. I think this is one of the many things that appeal to her readers, and this book is no exception. It is an emotional journey with these characters that we have come to love so much, and see their beautiful story arcs come together.
There is never a boring moment, and even with firing gunshots, aerial battles and trees on fire, it is the quiet character moments that truly sieze your heart. Also be prepared for an unprecedented Kaz and Inej moment to rock on your feet!
Nikolai had some tough choices ahead of him, and a demon inside him just waiting to fly off the rails. I was curious to see how Leigh Barudgo would get us out of that one. He is a character with a thick skin, because he is so determined, he is constantly optimistic and he has such a immense love and loyalty towards his country....his drive to somehow just fix his country is unrelenting. It's amazing.
Zoya's character is such a delight to go along, and I admire her so much. She has will of steel, and even though she has lost so much, she still powered through every single disaster like a queen. And not just Zoya, but all the female leads in this story are forces to be reckoned with.
Genya is my personal favourite. Her story is so inspiring and she's such a wonderful character. With everything that she has been put through, for her to still be so sweet and strong-hearted, it feels so empowering. I'm so glad sometimes that people my age get to read about characters like her.
You just can't help but be in love with her, and David's a darling, of course!
What will come as the biggest surprise to readers will be Nina's plotline. There are very unpredictable, but not really unpleasant things that happen, and I'm still not sure how I feel about that particular development. I don't hate it, obviously, 'cause I love Nina and I want good things for her. But it's just that it took a while for me to accept it, and I'm slowly really warming up to the idea.
š Lol. I know I'm being really vague here, but you'll get it once you read the book...
Something new to come was a kick of deadly, political intrigue with Fjerda and Taban. Compared to previous Grisha books, the politics is a much more central part of the plot and I really liked seeing that. There's always something going on behind the scenes, a disaster brewing hundreds of miles away and I loved it.
And then there was the Darkling! Uh, I mean, I do have some thoughts on that! And it's not exactly a spoiler that he comes back, as it was very obvious from the synopsis. So I kinda had mixed feelings about this, as I'm sure everyone knows that the last Shadow and Bone book almost pretty cleanly wrapped up the Darkling's story, but then it was a brought back in King of Scars in a way that seemed too...easy?? Like we spend three whole books fighting him because he is that immensely powerful and evil, and after sacrificing so much we finally kill him, but then he just... comes back?
Anybody wanna talk about this?
But moving on, all things considered, Ruke of Wolves was a pretty satisfying conclusion (or is it?) to a sweeping, beautifully written and explosive fantasy saga that will always be a part of All-Time favourites.
