Hello book-dragons!
I know, I KNOW, I'm a little late to the party, but I'm finally here. Honestly, I was a little hesitant to get into this series because of all the hype surrounding it as I thought that it was just going to be another do-over for Divergent, but I was genuinely surprised at what I found.
The conflict that the book is based is admittedly quite basic, and is something already seen quite a lot in dystopian, but Marie Lu adds her own special touch to it.
Personally, I think the synopsis gives too much away and that is why I haven't included it and am going to give you a small one of my own.
So basically the story is set in a futuristic version of America where the the western part has been separated and is called the Republic, which is where most of the story takes place, and all the rest are the Colonies. It follows the story of our two main characters, Day and June, who come from completely different worlds. June is an extremely smart and talented 15 year-old girl who comes from an elite background. She is the youngest student at a privileged military academy and is set to be a high-ranking officer.
On the other hand, Day is a 15 year-old boy, but he is also the most wanted criminal of the Republic. He comes from the slums and is struggling everyday to provide for his sick mother and two little brothers. Through some very tragic circumstances, June and Day's paths end up crossing and the plot starts unfolding from that point on.
That's pretty much all I'd like to say in terms of plot because I think that the less you know about it, the more fun it'll be to read.
It was an action-packed, really fast-paced story, but with just the right amount of deep, character moments to balance it out. There are a lot of twists and turns, the writing was really approachable, and the characters just blew me away! We get chapters from both Day and June's perspective and their voices are really distinct, so we can easily tell without even reading the tittle who's who.
Another thing that I especially loved about this book was the juxtaposition between the elite class and the working class that it showed so beautifully through the comparison of the lives of Day and June, and it is focused on quite a lot throughout the series.
One thing I would like to mention was the lack of world-building in the first book, and although we get a lot more of it in Prodigy, the second book, I just wish that we had gotten a little more of the backstory in the first book to substantiate why everything went to shambles in the first place.
I think that one book after another, Marie Lu's writing just keeps on getting better and better, which is why I think I liked Champion best of all three, because it is a lot more intense and overwhelming than the first two books, especially with the way it ended.
Contrary to popular opinion, my second favorite book in the series would be Rebel, and then maybe Prodigy, although I'm not sure if most people count Rebel as part of the series, though I loved it so I definitely do.
So all in all, I really enjoyed reading this, it was fun and I highly recommend picking this one up if you're bored and looking for an adrenaline rush while sitting on your couch.
