RATING- 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
AUTHOR- Cassandra Clare
Returning to the Shadowhunter world always feels like settling into your favourite armchair at home. The characters in the world feel so familiar and comfortable, like it hardly take any time do engross yourself in the story
If I say that I was waiting for this book to come out standing on the tips of my toes, ready to grab a copy, it would be an understatement. Because oh my gosh, did the first book destroy me!! And now I am at the end of the second book and it was so heartbreaking 💔 I'm going to be all over the place while I talk about this.
Love is not always a lightning bolt. Sometimes it is a creeping vine. It grows slowly until suddenly it is all that there is in the world.
Alastair's gaze flicked to Matthew. "Why," he said, "are you not even wearing a hat? "And cover up this hair?" Matthew indicated his golden locks with a flourish. "Would you blot out the sun?
One of the special things about it is the nostalgic appeal of the book. Even if I noticed some familiar plot devices and twists from some of her previous books, I didn't mind as much. I think it's safe to say that not many people come back to the Shadowhunter books because of "their refreshing take on magic" or something like that.
The writing is just as beautiful as always, with a sort-of poetic Victorian vibe to it.
The plot follows the classic Cassandra Clare style of snarky wit, angsty romances, drama to the fullest and demonic battles. Nothing wildly new or groundbreaking happens in the story, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
The only downside here is that in such a long-running series with multiple crossovers, often times the book is weighed down by references to past Shadowhunter events or setting up the scene for future events in previously released Shadowhunter novels.
The space gets slightly congested with not so much space for our current band of Shadowhunters to claim as their own.
Also, trying to keep family trees straight in your head is not easy.
Nevertheless, Clare has the ability to almost overfill her books with plot and drama, and yet they somehow never feel too dense.
The tender moments among the Merry Thieves, Lucy's vibrant personality, Matthew and James' friendship and Cordelia battling demons with Cortana in hand, to me, are worth every penny.
